Genesee County commissioners consider outsourcing computer services as Web site problems continue

GENESEE COUNTY — The county could outsource its computer and information services and the chairman of the Board of Commissioners says continuing problems with the county’s Web site aren’t helping the cause of those who want to keep the service in-house.

“I think they are building a case for why it needs to privatized,” said Jamie Curtis, chairman of the county commission. “I’m frustrated by it. I’m sick and tired of it.”

Curtis has made no secret that he’s not impressed by the county’s Web site overall, saying it puts this area at a competitive disadvantage because it doesn’t measure up to other counties in terms of information of ease of use.

Scottish Water sources £28m deal with Fujitsu

Scottish Water has signed an eight year deal worth £28m with Fujitsu Services.

The utility company expects the agreement to generate savings of 20 per cent, as Fujitsu takes responsibility for IT infrastructure and service desks. The contract will require Fujitsu to support 4,000 employees based in offices around Scotland, as well engineers and remote workers.

Bharti Airtel shortlists five IT firms for Africa outsourcing deal

Indian operator to award contract worth more than $1 billion.

Bharti Airtel Ltd. has shortlisted five companies for a contract worth more than $1 billion to provide technology outsourcing services for its newly acquired African operations, the Economic Times newspaper reported Friday, citing two unnamed people with direct knowledge of the matter.

The report said International Business Machines Corp.–which currently provides information technology services to Bharti Airtel in India and Sri Lanka–Hewlett-Packard Co. and Accenture PLC are among the multinational vendors, while Wipro Ltd. and Tech Mahindra Ltd. are the Indian vendors that have been shortlisted.

Incentive scheme soon for IT firms planning to set up rural BPOs

CHENNAI: The government will soon come out with an incentive scheme for IT companies planning to set up rural BPO centres.

“We’re in the final stages of approval for the scheme that will have a capital subsidy and training subsidy component for rural BPOs,” P.W.C. Davidar, IT Secretary, told The Hindu on the sidelines of ‘An Evening with the IT Minister,’ an interactive session hosted by CII-NASSCOM with IT Minister Poongothai Aladi Aruna.

Infy closes BPO in Bangkok

The business process outsourcing arm of India’s [ Images ] second-largest information technology services company, Infosys [ Get Quote ], has shut its centre in Bangkok, which it had acquired from Philips.

The centre was primarily handling the back-office works of Philips globally. As a result, the company has moved about 40 of the 175-odd staff at the centre to China.

Confirming the development, Infosys BPO’s CEO and MD Swami Swaminathan said, “We could not scale this centre from a service offering standpoint, as most of our international clients are very comfortable sending work either to India or China.

Ericsson Lands China Mobile Deal

In the largest outsourcing deal of its kind to date in the Asia-Pacific Region, Ericsson said it will take over network operations and management for China Mobile in Hebei Province, China – a region of 70 million people surrounding Beijing, the capital.

The deal marks a triumph for Ericsson, whose fastest-growing business is its network outsourcing division, but which has struggled to strike such deals in China, where stringent worker-protection laws make it difficult to lay off employees affected by outsourcing agreements.

Harbinger venture signs NSN in $7B outsourcing deal

Fresh off its agreement to buy Motorola Inc.’s networks business, Nokia Siemens Networks said it will build Harbinger Capital Partners’ LTE network in an eight-year deal valued at $7 billion, marking NSN’s biggest North American contract and the largest outsourcing deal in the United States.

Harbinger, meanwhile, released more details about its plan to build out a nationwide LTE network under a wholesale model, selling to wireless operators and other companies that want to offer branded wireless service. The company said it is launching LightSquared and announced it management team, led by former Orange executive Sanjiv Ahuja, who will become chairman and CEO.

TPI Index: Global Outsourcing Market Not Yet Bouncing Back

HOUSTON, July 20 /NEWS.GNOM.ES/ — TPI, the largest sourcing data and advisory firm in the world and a unit of Information Services Group, Inc. (ISG) (Nasdaq: III), an industry-leading information-based services company, released data today showing that the global outsourcing market is not yet bouncing back as economic uncertainty continues to weigh on corporations around the world.

The 2Q10 Global TPI Index, which measures commercial outsourcing contracts valued at $25 million or more, recorded total contract value (TCV) of $18.1 billion in the second quarter of 2010, down about 13 percent both sequentially and year-over-year. The market in the second quarter exhibited particular softness in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), Asia Pacific and IT outsourcing (ITO).

Unilever Signs Outsourcing Contract with BT

An outsourcing contract has been signed between the retail giant Unilever and BT with an estimated worth of £144m. The technologies that are to be implemented within the next four years are messaging, supply chain and wireless technology over the 100 countries that lie within Unilever’s three operating regions. The services included are design, management and the operation of a secure, fully integrated end-to-end IT networking infrastructure, delivering data, voice, video and mobility services to all Unilever sites.

Offshore outsourcing picking up after recession: Everest

The outsourcing market is witnessing an increase in activity as the global economy recovers from the recession of 2009, according to a report by Everest Research Institute.

Offshore outsourcing business that was in the pipeline, but was delayed during the recession for financial reasons or for lack of management focus, is now gathering momentum again, Anand Ramesh [CQ}, research director at Everest, said on Saturday.
