OFWs find career success in BPO company

MANILA, Philippines – Five years ago, when Mark Barachina first arrived in Singapore, he fell in love with the country. He successfully found employment there and was able to fulfill a dream for himself and his family to live and work abroad.

Today, however, Barachina is back in the country after realizing his career dreams were here all along. He now works as a senior storage and backup administrator for TELUS International Philippines, a business process outsourcing (BPO) firm.

WNS Global Services to invest USD 15-mn to open new centers

MUMBAI: Leading global BPO player, WNS Global Services, plans to invest USD 15-million to open new centers in India in 2010, a top company official said.

The NYSE-listed WNS is serving 200-plus global clients from 21 delivery centers world-wide.

“In 2010, our capex is expected to be around USD 15- million and a lot of it will be invested in new centers in India. WNS is a global company and India plays a great part in our overall growth aspirations from a leadership, people, infrastructure and sustainability view,” WNS Global Services Group CEO, Keshav R Murugesh, told PTI here.

From burgers to cereals: BPO firm goes healthy

MANILA, Philippines – Convergys Corp. has started a nationwide campaign to make its employees eat healthy as regular mealtimes and high consumption of fast food, coffee and alcohol characterize the diet of workers in the business process outsourcing (BPO) industry.

The company signed a “mutual wellness pledge” with consumer giant Nestle to implement its “Win with Wellness” campaign with the latter’s “Show off Your Shape” program.

Here, employees were asked to replace their breakfast and one other meal with whole grain cereal for 14 days, and to take snacks that are low in fat such as fruits, vegetables and yogurt.

Aspire Outsourcing opens in Newcastle

THE man who built a North East call centre business from scratch to employ more than 1,000 staff has launched a new venture he hopes will grow to be as big.

Aspire Outsourcing has opened a base in Newcastle city centre after winning a contract to handle telemarketing for a major UK utility company. It currently has 20 staff and this will rise to 50 within the next few months and it has plans to secure further work hoping to boost staff numbers to 250 within the space of a few years. It has been established by four long-standing contact centre operators with over 50 years’ experience between them.

Clients, others who criticized Ind. welfare outsourcing find no satisfaction in lawsuits

INDIANAPOLIS — Privatization critics now can say “we told you so” with the state’s decision to sue IBM Corp. over the botched outsourcing of welfare applications, but it gave them little satisfaction Friday.

One day after the state and IBM sued each other over the technology giant’s canceled $1.37 billion deal to automate intake for Medicaid, food stamps and other benefits, critics of one of the costliest contracts in state history — along with clients who struggled to keep their benefits — said Gov. Mitch Daniels ignored warnings that outsourcing such a critical government function was fraught with risks.

Tech Mahindra plans overseas BPO centres

IT and BPO services provider Tech Mahindra plans to set up BPO centres overseas during this year, with North America amongst the likely locations for the launch.

“We can’t base our business model purely on cost arbitrage,” Mr Vineet Nayyar, Vice-Chairman, said, adding that the company had acquired a lot of technological and managerial know-how. “It is superior, and there is no reason why we cannot set up in Phoenix and not do better than the locals,” he said. There would be hiccups and the issue needed to be looked at maturely and not parochially, he said.

NorthgateArinso plans acquisition of Convergys to develop its global standing

NorthgateArinso is to strengthen its global position with plans to acquire the HR management division of US provider Convergys.

The transaction is worth approximately $85 million in cash at closing and $15 million in cash over three years. It involves NorthgateArinso acquiring the assets, including the global HR service delivery network and entire customer portfolio, of Convergys’ HR management division.

Convergys’ HR outsourcing customers will benefit from NorthgateArinso’s clear focus on HR software and services and from its world-class HR delivery capabilities. NorthgateArinso is known for its innovation in the sector, including the creation of platform-based HR Business Process Outsourcing (BPO).

Stream Global expands BPO operations

Stream Global Services recently announced plans of bringing in more investment and expanding operations in the Philippines in line with its vision to become the nation’s top BPO employer.

At a press conference during the formal launch of its second contact center in the country, Stream CEO and Chairman R. Scott Murray said his company plans to employ some 10,000 to 15,000 Filipinos in the next three to five years.

Aegis to set up training academy with IIM help

Aegis, the business process outsourcing (BPO) arm of the Essar Group, has planned to include higher education as one of its business divisions. It has formalised a plan and brought in a multinational firm with expertise in customer experience management for this. It is also close to tying-up with a leading Indian Institute of Management (IIM) to devise a curriculum.

“The idea is to address the demand-supply gap of qualified people in the aspects of customer experience management and customer lifecycle management concepts that drive profitability in the services industry. So far, there is no institute or course like this being offered in India,” said a source. When asked, the company spokesperson declined to comment.
