Google in China: Drawing lessons for your IT outsourcing plan

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

Google’s decision this week to stop cooperating with Chinese government censors — and, quite likely, pull its business efforts out of China completely — has lit up the tech sphere, with people around the world debating the human-rights and free-speech elements of the Google-in-China decision. Remember, this is a company branded with the unusual slogan, “Don’t be evil,” and some of its users saw Google’s cooperation with Chinese censors as just that.

Given my recent work covering outsourcing and offshoring plans among enterprise IT organizations, the international element of this brouhaha speaks to the idea of U.S.-based businesses investing in business operations abroad, the due diligence that takes place in assessing IT outsourcing locales, and whether the business should be prepared to accede to the mores of its new base.

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

Enterprise and Innovation Minister Batt O’Keeffe today announced 300 call centre jobs for Cork at outsourcing firm Abtran over the next 2 years. He called the jobs expansion a “landmark investment.”

Abtran says it is the largest indigenous business process outsourcer (BPO) in the Irish market. It was established in 1997 and currently employs in excess of 1,000 staff across multiple business sites. The new jobs are promised over the next two years and are the result of a €3m investment in research and development, supported by Enterprise Ireland. Its client list includes Sky TV, An Post, the Irish Financial Regulator, Hibernian Insurance, the ESB and, most recently, eFlow, the firm that operates the barrier-free tolling regime on the M50 in Dublin.

No estimate was available on the number of jobs in client firms which will be lost because of the outsourcing.

ith an increasing number of medical institutions commissioning analysis of patients’ image data to outside entities via the Internet due to a shortage of doctors and other reasons, some companies have begun entrusting the work to doctors in China who offer low-priced services.

In response, organizations of Japanese doctors, such as the Japan Radiological Society, set up a guideline stipulating that only those with a Japanese doctor’s license are entitled to make diagnoses based on such data.

The issue will likely be a hot topic at the society’s meeting to be held in Yokohama from Thursday.

China: $1 Billion And Ambition

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

The chief executive of VanceInfo, Chris Chen, had no qualms in telling me that he wants the business he founded in 1995 to “become the biggest outsourcing firm in the world.” We met between flights at Beijing’s airport. He is on this way, counting Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard and IBM as clients.

He’s not the only one advancing China’s push into the vast, varied outsourcing market. In northeastern China’s industrial city of Shenyang, I recently met with Liu Jiren, the CEO of Neusoft–the largest Chinese outsourcing company, with $540 million in revenues, 15,000 employees and 8,000 corporate customers, the majority of them in China and nearby Japan.
