Ericsson Lands China Mobile Deal

In the largest outsourcing deal of its kind to date in the Asia-Pacific Region, Ericsson said it will take over network operations and management for China Mobile in Hebei Province, China – a region of 70 million people surrounding Beijing, the capital.

The deal marks a triumph for Ericsson, whose fastest-growing business is its network outsourcing division, but which has struggled to strike such deals in China, where stringent worker-protection laws make it difficult to lay off employees affected by outsourcing agreements.

Harbinger venture signs NSN in $7B outsourcing deal

Fresh off its agreement to buy Motorola Inc.’s networks business, Nokia Siemens Networks said it will build Harbinger Capital Partners’ LTE network in an eight-year deal valued at $7 billion, marking NSN’s biggest North American contract and the largest outsourcing deal in the United States.

Harbinger, meanwhile, released more details about its plan to build out a nationwide LTE network under a wholesale model, selling to wireless operators and other companies that want to offer branded wireless service. The company said it is launching LightSquared and announced it management team, led by former Orange executive Sanjiv Ahuja, who will become chairman and CEO.

IBM and Indiana at legal loggerheads over cancelled outsourcing deal

The US State of Indiana and computer giant IBM are taking each other to court over a 10-year, $1.6 billion outsourcing contract that was designed to modernise Indiana’s ageing welfare administration system.

Yesterday, the two parties filed claims and counterclaims against each other over the project, which came to a halt when Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels pulled the plug in October 2009, describing the system delivered by IBM as “unworkable”.

MTNL drops plan to outsource 3G networks to Virgin Mobile, Spice

NEW DELHI: State-owned telecom company MTNL has cancelled a plan to hand over the management, marketing and running of its 3G networks in Mumbai and Delhi to Virgin Mobile and Spice Group.

In late 2009, MTNL had shortlisted these two firms after a global tender to run its fledgling third-generation services in Delhi and Mumbai for 10 years on a revenue-sharing basis.

MTNL executives said the contract was cancelled because the government did not approve of it, while industry sources familiar with the subject said (more…)

Axis Bank inks largest ATM outsourcing deal

In what is the largest ATM outsourcing deal in the country, Axis Bank has entered into an agreement with two third-party service providers to increase its ATM count to more than 9,000 within the next 18 months.

The country’s third-largest private sector lender has signed contracts with Prizm Payment Services and AGS Infotech to set up and manage 5,000 ATMs on a purely variable model, according to a person with knowledge of the development

Axis Bank had 4,293 ATMs as on March 31, 2010.

XMG: Next president should focus on ICT policy, infrastructure

WITH BUSINESS PROCESS outsourcing now one of the country’s growth drivers, the next president should see to it that information and communications technology-related policies and infrastructure are prioritized, an ICT research and advisory firm said.

In an open letter to the next president, Canada-based XMG Global Inc. proposed six key points that the next administration should focus on, to ensure the country’s long-term competitiveness in the fields of BPO and other IT-enabled services.

IT-infrastructure Outsourcing, Multisourcing Boosted by ITIL Framework

The Procter & Gamble, an $80 billion a year consumer-products company based in Cincinnati, with more than 135,000 employees in 80 countries, has gone through several rounds of IT outsourcing, starting in 2003.

“We were embarking on a fairly rapid global expansion, and we felt like we needed to have the capacity and capability to meet that global expansion and business expansion with IT infrastructure and application capabilities,” said Daryl Goetz, Procter & Gamble’s global IT Service Management (ITSM)/ITIL manager.

MindTree outbids TCS, Wipro, Infy to win UIDAI contract

NEW DELHI: Mid-sized software service provider MindTree outbid larger rivals Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Infosys, Wipro apart from top multinational firms, to win Rs 30-crore contract from India’s Unique Identification Authority (UIDAI), senior government officials and persons familiar with the project told ET on Thursday.

While the contract is small when compared with several multi-million dollar deals announced by various government departments over past few years, it’s the first in a series of projects worth up to $1 billion to be outsourced by the UIDAI.

Two Ayala firms tie up to build five buildings

Two sister companies of the Ayala Group of companies have become partners to develop five major projects in Cebu City in the coming years.

Cebu Holdings Inc. (CHI) and Cebu Property Ventures Development Corp. (CPVDC), both affiliates of Ayala Land Inc., will focus their development projects in two Ayala properties – the Cebu Business Park and the Asiatown IT Park.

Mobilicity outsources network management to Ericsson

In the fight against industry behemoths, wireless upstart Mobilicity knows it must be nimble.

And in a business where the cost of acquiring customers can be punishing combined with relatively puny marketing muscle compared to Rogers Communications Inc., BCE Inc. and Telus Corp., cutting costs is the priority.

Tuesday, the soon-to-launch carrier pared back perhaps the biggest operating expense of all: managing its network, announcing a long-term agreement with Ericsson AB, the Swedish network maker that took over Nortel Networks Corp.’s wireless business last year. The agreement will see day-to-day operations handled by Ericsson for the next five years.
