Friday, June 25th, 2010

Kenyan operators turn to outsourcing to stay in the game

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

In order to remain competitive, Kenyan telecom operators are outsourcing their customer service and Network management operations.

Following Telkom Kenya and Zain’s decision to outsource its customer care line, Essar Telecom Kenya, operating under the Yu brand, announced a similar outsourcing agreement with to Aegis, an Indian-based BPO company, that would enable the operator to cut costs in a market where margins are very low.

Zain Kenya has already outsourced the operation of its customer care services and Network management to Nokia Siemens, while Telkom Kenya has outsourced its customer care operations to local BPOs Horizon and Kencall, in an effort to keep its employee costs low.

Patni sets up North American BPO hub in Texas

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Global IT and BPO services provider, Patni Computer Systems, on Tuesday said it has set up a new North American hub for Business Process Outsourcing operations in El Paso, Texas.

The establishment of the El Paso site follows Patni’s recent move to open a nearshore center in Queretaro, Mexico, to serve North American and Latin American markets and augment the company’s global delivery capabilities, a company release stated in Mumbai.

Establishing the new service hub expands Patni’s business process outsourcing and knowledge process outsourcing delivery capability to service North American customers from domestic locations in a cost-effective manner and employ highly-skilled local talent, the release said.

It will employ more than 300 skilled professionals providing a wide range of insurance, financial services, F&A, technical support and multi-lingual helpdesk services to Patni’s North American clients, it said.

“We have embarked on a plan to expand our domestic operations to address evolving customer requirements for cost-effective services from onshore locations,” Patni Americas’ President, Naresh Lakhanpal, said.

Companies’ outsourcing spend to increase

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

A recent Gartner survey found that 85 percent of organizations anticipate their spending with external service providers (ESP) to increase or stay the same when the economy returns, pointing to a return to growth in the IT services market in 2010.

In a Monday report, the research firm said 76 percent of organizations surveyed were optimistic about the economic recovery time frame and had indicated in their business planning cycles that there were seeing recovery as early as 2009 or occurring in 2010.

The survey of 1,073 respondents was conducted from November to December 2009 across the US, Europe and Asia-Pacific regions to determine how economic changes have impacted IT services buying and decision-making. Respondents were taken from a range of company sizes and vertical markets, excluding government organizations.

Outsourcing – know your options

Friday, February 26th, 2010

(Excerpt)Different scenarios for IT outsourcing that might just give organizations better ideas than the cloud computing option.

Cloud computing is the latest buzzword to hit the IT industry the world over. However, due to connectivity and infrastructure issues locally, this model has been slow to take off, as cloud applications tend to be bandwidth intensive and South Africa’s networks have not been able to support them.

However, cloud computing is only one type of outsourcing of IT services, and there are a number of other models that could be more applicable in the local market, including full outsourcing, co-sourcing, and managed and hosted services; each of which offers different business and strategic benefits.

Full outsourcing. This scenario involves completely handing over control of the entire IT environment to an outsourcing provider, from the desktop to the network through to connectivity. The client does not have to manage the complex IT infrastructure and places the implementation, maintenance and control of the environment in the hands of a vendor.

Outsourcing – know your options

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

Cloud computing is the latest buzzword to hit the IT industry the world over. However, due to connectivity and infrastructure issues locally, this model has been slow to take off, as cloud applications tend to be bandwidth-intensive and South Africa’s networks have not been able to support them.

However, cloud computing is only one type of outsourcing of IT services, and there are a number of other models that could be more applicable in the local market, including full outsourcing, co-sourcing, and managed and hosted services; each of which offers different business and strategic benefits.

Full outsourcing

This scenario involves completely handing over control of the entire IT environment to an outsourcing provider, from the desktop to the network through to connectivity. The client does not have to manage the complex IT infrastructure and places the implementation, maintenance and control of the environment in the hands of a vendor.

This model is particularly useful for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) as it removes the need for them to spend large amounts of capital outlay when deploying, maintaining and upgrading their IT infrastructure. It also gives smaller enterprises access to a wide range of specialised skills that they could not afford to hire on an in-house basis.

The main benefits of this scenario are significantly reduced IT cost, access to a range of skills and resources, and reduced lead times when implementing or maintaining, as the business only needs to deal with one supplier. The relationships that outsource vendors have with their suppliers can also be leveraged, as they can often get reduced costs and pass these savings onto the client.

One thing to bear in mind is that when looking for an outsource vendor, a business needs to ensure they can deliver as promised and support the organisation’s requirements. Otherwise an enterprise may find itself locked into a contract with a supplier that cannot deliver, causing major problems for the business as well as additional expense.
