Genesee County commissioners consider outsourcing computer services as Web site problems continue

Friday, July 30th, 2010

GENESEE COUNTY — The county could outsource its computer and information services and the chairman of the Board of Commissioners says continuing problems with the county’s Web site aren’t helping the cause of those who want to keep the service in-house.

“I think they are building a case for why it needs to privatized,” said Jamie Curtis, chairman of the county commission. “I’m frustrated by it. I’m sick and tired of it.”

Curtis has made no secret that he’s not impressed by the county’s Web site overall, saying it puts this area at a competitive disadvantage because it doesn’t measure up to other counties in terms of information of ease of use.

Budget passes; outsourcing reduced

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

After hours of deliberation, the Somerville Board of Alderman early this morning approved a budget proposed by Mayor Joseph Curtatone that includes a modified “hybrid” outsourcing of school custodial services.

The revised $165,467,296 budget includes $40,000 in cuts made possible by wage concessions agreed to by non-union employees. A request sent to all collective bargaining units asking for a similar sacrifice was not granted, Curtatone said on Tuesday.

“We have received not a single offer of sustainable cost reduction from any of our collective bargaining units,” he said, adding that an offer submitted by the Somerville Municipal Employees Association to defer a portion of members’ wages could “hardly be considered sustainable.” The offer requires the funds to be repaid in full beginning in fiscal 2013.

The age of journalistic outsourcing

Monday, June 21st, 2010

In a seventh-floor conference room festooned with framed articles and journalism awards, Managing Editor Gordon Witkin leads the morning discussion of stories his staff is pursuing.

Their latest scoop–on members of Congress dumping their BP stock–”was a big success,” he says. “It was in an AP story that sent it everywhere, including Yahoo and Google News.”

On the front burner, a dozen staffers around the table explain, is a joint series just approved by the New York Times. A piece under way with The Washington Post is being edited. There was a “tough conference call,” says international director David Kaplan, with eight London producers on a 10-segment project with the BBC.

IBM and Indiana at legal loggerheads over cancelled outsourcing deal

Friday, June 18th, 2010

Google and EA Make it Clear: Bold, Risk-Taking and Culturally Compatible IT Outsourcing Partners Wanted

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

NEW YORK CITY – IT outsourcing service providers that want to work with major tech companies had better, in the immortal words of James Brown, “get up, get into it, and get involved.”

Representatives from several leading-edge sourcing buyers made it clear at a panel discussion here at the NASDAQ Building in Times Square last night that they’re looking for providers who aren’t just skilled developers but who also know how to engage as real partners in a project. Taking orders and typing code won’t be enough. Oh, and playing video games can also be important.

Risky Behavior Encouraged
