UPDATE: Telecom New Zealand: Technology Outsourcing Contract Up For Grabs

Friday, May 7th, 2010

WELLINGTON -(Dow Jones)- Telecom Corp of New Zealand Ltd. (TEL.NZ) confirmed Tuesday it is in preliminary talks with a number of companies over an outsourcing contract for a large chunk of its technical services, but it said signing any contract is some time away.

Telecom spokesman Ian Bonnar told Dow Jones Newswires he couldn’t say which companies Telecom is talking to or how much the contract is worth as it is commercially sensitive.
India’s Economic Times reported on its Web site Tuesday, citing people familiar with the company’s decision making, that India’s Tech Mahindra Ltd. (532755.BY) and Wipro Ltd. (507685.BY) are among companies in discussions with Telecom over the outsourcing contract it said is worth a potential $1 billion.

Growth in Indian ITeS sector boosts English-language school enrollment

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

New Delhi: The value of a college degree dawned on Tabassum Naaz’s family only when the 22-year-old village woman landed a job at Aegis business process outsourcing in Gurgaon, a hub of information technology-enabled services (ITeS) on the outskirts of New Delhi.

“When I was preparing to come to Delhi for a job, everyone in the village laughed and asked how was it possible that my village education would find me a job in a big city,” recalls Naaz, who studied at the little-known Sant Sri BM College at Jagdishpur in Bihar.

Markets News Monday: “Landmark investment” of 300 outsourcing jobs for Cork at Abtran; China reports first trade deficit in 6 years; Euro gains after Greek support plan

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

Enterprise and Innovation Minister Batt O’Keeffe today announced 300 call centre jobs for Cork at outsourcing firm Abtran over the next 2 years. He called the jobs expansion a “landmark investment.”

Abtran says it is the largest indigenous business process outsourcer (BPO) in the Irish market. It was established in 1997 and currently employs in excess of 1,000 staff across multiple business sites. The new jobs are promised over the next two years and are the result of a €3m investment in research and development, supported by Enterprise Ireland. Its client list includes Sky TV, An Post, the Irish Financial Regulator, Hibernian Insurance, the ESB and, most recently, eFlow, the firm that operates the barrier-free tolling regime on the M50 in Dublin.

No estimate was available on the number of jobs in client firms which will be lost because of the outsourcing.

HealthCare, I.T. and Outsourcing’s Old Prospect Just Got Hotter

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

A few months back I wrote an article on how outsourcing has already been helping with cost reductions in the Healthcare Industry, and with the recent passing of the U.S. Healthcare Reform Bill, many are anticipating an increase in business opportunities in this sector.

I.T. industries in India are among one of those anticipating new businesses in the health sector. According to Satish Menon, associate VP (corporate finance healthcare advisory), KPMG, Infosys (NASDAQ:INFY) would be one of the beneficiaries of the reform since it’s already in their line of products and an established robust clientele. Wipro Ltd. (NYSE:WIT) is optimistic as this reform would be at the intersection of its strategic units of health care and government said Rajiv Shah, senior vice president, healthcare vertical, at Wipro Technologies. Another company that has already had a strategic deal with a US-based healthcare insurance provider that involved taking over part of its operations in El Paso, US is Patni Computer Systems Limited (NYSE:PTI).

Domestic Outsourcing Preferred Over Offshoring Among Executives

Monday, April 12th, 2010

IT consulting firm and solution provider, Advans, has said that their survey underscores the widening of popularity of domestic outsourcing. The Advan’s IT Outsourcing Survey revealed that 75 percent of managers opted for domestic outsourcing rather than offshoring to top outsourcing locations like India.

Moreover, the 37 percent of the executives polled said they were interested in additional outsourcing of some IT projects in the next year. The top two categories listed for outsourcing were database administration and QA activities.

Economic Recovery Brings More Global Expansions in Outsourcing

Monday, April 12th, 2010

It was English historian Edward Gibbon who said that that, “all that is human must retrograde if it does not advance”, and in outsourcing, this is likewise the case. As the end of the first quarter draws near, it is noticeable that business expansion among outsourcing companies have become more marked, and is in various different parts of the world. Companies are expanding their global presence in anticipation of more business in different fields such as legal process outsourcing (LPO), business process outsourcing (BPO) and information technology (IT) outsourcing. It is encouraging that the anticipation of the influx of business for the outsourcing industry has been steadily rising since the start of 2010. It would seem that despite the effects of the recession having barely begun to wane, outsourcing companies are still expecting a better outlook.

Outsourcing threat to French nuns’ holy industry

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

It is one of the most potent symbols of the Christian church: the thin, round unleavened wafer used in the celebration of holy communion.

Traditionally this “sacramental bread”, representing the body of Christ, has been made by nuns as a source of income for their communities. But the good sisters of France have found that even the body of Christ is subject to free market forces.

In a temporal battle that threatened to take the bread from their mouths, nuns producing communion wafers for French churches were shocked to learn that the religious authorities at Lourdes – one of France’s holiest shrines – were contemplating buying cheaper hosts from Poland. To add insult the Polish “hosts” are made by a secular workforce.

Women more satisfied working in public sector than BPOs

Monday, March 8th, 2010

NEW DELHI: Women working in public sector undertakings (PSUs) are more satisfied than those working in private outsourcing companies, says a study by the Associated Chamber of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham).

“Majority of working women gave priority to PSU sectors because the sector provided them job satisfaction, including reasonably good annual income, with job security and convenient working hours besides a healthy work environment,” the study, Empowering the Women, said.

Releasing the findings of the study, Assocham president Swati Piramal said women engaged in business process outsourcing (BPO) and KPO (knowledge process outsourcing) sectors are least satisfied with their jobs.
